Student Reader Comments:
•To start off, WOW, this is very impressive. Well designed. Contains a lot of valuable insight that would be so enormously useful to any high school student or even college students undecided about which major to pursue.
•One thing that stands out to me are the numerous amount of jobs that certain majors can lead too, some of them I wouldn’t ever have thought of.
•This book is so vitally important to students choosing an area of study because a specific major may be “your calling,” but if you don’t know it exists how would you ever pursue it?
•Chapter 5 really sparked my interest. You were talking about how families spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars visiting schools when really that specific school you just spent time and money visiting isn’t even close to being the right choice. The College Selection Criteria exercise would help decrease the number of schools on your list and can save parents a ton of time and money!
•Entering college most students are very competitive, they want to go to the best school no matter the cost. Well, today Money is everything.. Sad, but true.
•I found it intriguing that elite university graduates earn only 2-3% more (over the course of their careers) than non-elite university graduates. And, in the end, it’s a wash because the price of that ‘elite’ college was so much more expensive then a ‘mainstream’ university. Which brings you back to the chapter’s opening quote, “It’s not about the college, university, or trade school, it’s about the individual.” Any college student can be the CEO of a company…just depends on how bad you want to be successful and what steps you are willing to take to get there.
•It’s very important that hard numbers for the cost of college were listed… gives people a reality check, “What can I afford?” “Where should I be looking?”
•Again the additional cost of college that high school students don’t think about is huge! Those little costs add up very quickly, and if you’re the one paying, better not forget to add that to your projected budget.
•Giving people the hyperlinks to additional sites is a good addition, shows students/parents you really want them to succeed.
•The ‘Financial Aid ‘ chapter is HUGE!! It would be very beneficial for students, more importantly parents, to see what they can apply for given their family income. That will save people time by showing them what to and what not to apply for.
•Listing the ACT/SAT scores you need for certain colleges is an enormous benefit,; will be very useful to students and should give them that added motivation to kill those tests. Explaining what is on each part is most likely something they have heard before but is a good reminder.
•Explaining how to formulate your admission essay is brilliant,. That is a huge determinant to whether a student gets accepted or denied. Tips are very helpful.
•Chapter 9… absolutely phenomenal. For students who want to intern or co-op this would prepare them like nothing else for their interviews.
•Overall this book is exceptional! Going through this document I kept saying, “Where was this when I was a high school senior?” “ You can have that job by studying that major?” “This would have so valuable to have.”
•I learned so much by going through this document. Chapter 9 is unbelievable…really gets you thinking about not only what type of student you are, but what kind of person you really are. It makes you take a step back and truly think.
If I was a high school student I would invest in this book, hands down. Would be one of the best investments of my life. This book could save families thousands of dollars and save parents countless hours worrying about their son’s/daughter’s college plans.
